Software

This software is generally available for Windows, Mac, and across the Linux ecosystem. Exceptions will be posted.

Operating Systems

With limited exception, these options are based on Linux.

General purpose systems

Offered in subjective order of complexity to get into. If uncertain, start at the top.

  • Linux Mint - A general-purpose linux desktop, familiar for Windows users
  • Ubuntu - The classic user-friendly Linux introduction
  • Debian - notoriously solid, stable Linux; can be tricky for newcomers
  • Fedora Linux - faster releases, closer to the 'cutting edge' of linux technology
  • openSUSE - Close to fedora with different releases
  • Arch Linux - Mix the binaries together yourself, do you use this btw?
  • Gentoo - build all of your own binaries

Guides & Sources

The focuses of these sites vary. Take your time, don't rush, absorb what you find useful at your own pace.

VPNs, Filtering, & DNS

Before investing in any of these tools, see:

VPNs & full networks,

The VPNs are carefully listed and avoid major known conglomorates, honeypots, and scams. Nonetheless, you should thoroughly look into these tools (and anything else on this wiki) before making them a part of your routine

DNS choices (less thorough than a VPN, but still has benefits):

Want to run DNS filtering yourself? Look into Piholes

General

Content below this point has only partially been updated recently for working links, currentness, and relevance.

  • Monero - Feds hate this bitcoin
  • qBittorrent - Decentralized and encrypted file sharing, a top choice
  • GNUnet - Secure Anonymous Peer-to-Peer Networking
  • Vole.cc - Decentralized Social Media

Web Search

Several suggestions will have backhanded controversy links. Before they lead you to believe there is no good option, consider there will be a very full list of far worse things for Google, Bing, ChatGPT and more...

Chat Platforms

  • Signal - centralized privacy-oriented chat
  • SimpleX Chat - a more decentralized privacy-oriented chat
  • More that need to be filled in

Browsers

  • Brave - a browser with a pitch for privacy and competent ad blocking; integrates crypto, ai, web3 tech
  • Helium - a no BS recent desktop browser with ad blocking and few frills
  • Cromite - built in ad blocking support with an eye for privacy, based on Android, Linux and Windows
  • ungoogled-chromium - chromium trying to reduce Google dependence

Above browsers are based on 'Chromium', which is the foundation for Chrome, Edge and other mainstream browsers. Few noteworthy alternatives built from scratch except Safari and Firefox exist.

Firefox based forks,

  • LibreWolf - a Firefox soft fork with an eye for privacy, security, and stripping bloat
    • May behave unexpectedly for new users; may need priming for people without experience. A guide should be coming soon
  • Waterfox - a fork vaguely in between Librewolf and straight Firefox
  • Zen Browser - brings a very distinct aesthetic
  • Floorp - extremely customizable Firefox
  • IronFox - a hardened, privacy & security oriented fork for Android
  • Pale Moon - a radical fork from Firefox, not dependent on upstream
  • IceCat - fully "free" software
  • Note that Firefox forks depend heavily on Firefox development itself, and do not exist fully independently from it.

And others,

  • Ladybird - the only non-Chromium or Firefox based contender with traction, very early development
  • Servo - Ladybird's competitor, slower on development
  • Falkon - the KDE offering
  • Epiphany/Web the GNOME offering
  • Beware of AI driven browsers... where the only hacking skill required now is wordsmithing.
Browser Add-ons
  • Ublock Origin - best in class ad blocking and content blocking for everyday use, available on virtually any browser
  • uMatrix - far more precise content blocker than UBO
  • Every addon can have sensitive access to your browser and may be disasterous if it is compromised. For this reason, prefer to install as few addons as possible. Consider using profile features to separate less trusted addon use from sensitive logged-in environments like banking or email
  • Layered addons like multiple adblockers at once can get in the way. Good adblockers do not need backup. You can back them up with DNS based blocking and strong browser & operating system choices

Email

Services,

Clients,

  • Claws Mail - Lightweight email application with GPG support
  • Evolution - Free email and calendar application with GPG support
  • IceDove - Free version of Mozilla Thunderbird *requires GPG plug-in
  • KMail - KDE email client with GPG support
  • Thunderbird - Open source email application *requires GPG plug-in
