Bodily Autonomy Plank
Platform Committee 2026-08-25 sent the following to PNC for review. The intent is for this to be discussion, and not for immediate adoption.
Reproductive rights, morphological freedom are some of the cornerstones of bodily autonomy. We believe that this right to bodily autonomy must be ensured. As such any infringement upon those rights disable each and every person's fundamental ability to the pursuit of happiness.
Abortion is critical healthcare, and deepening restrictions on abortion have caused severe harms. We believe there should be federal legislation protecting the right to an abortion. We should repeal the Hyde Amendment and guarantee abortion access with interstate-travel protections and legal protections for healthcare providers. To further enshrine abortion access, the Comstock Act should be repealed.
We need to protect IVF and other assisted reproduction technologies. We believe that access to contraception should be ensured with federal legislation. We will decriminalize sex work. Decriminalizing improves safety, health outcomes, and allows already marginalized sex workers more stable livelihoods. Forced or coerced sterilization should be prohibited. We reject the idea of fetal personhood.
We believe that due to the unreliability of the Supreme Court we must enshrine fundamental rights beyond court rulings. Legislation should be written affirming Lawrence v. Texas & Martin v. Ziherl. Conversion therapy should be banned at the federal level, it’s an archaic and abhorrent practice with no place in a free society.
We will protect access to gender affirming care, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy counseling, and surgery. HRT should be made available over the counter. Through federal legislation, we will make legal gender based on a self-identification system, and recognize a third gender. The cost to change one’s legal name should be affordable. We will ban elective surgeries on intersex infants without an immediate medical concern.
